America Reads volunteers listen to students read in area elementary schools in an effort to improve their reading ability.
Through the America Reads Program, you could:
• Listen to a child read at one of our area elementary schools
• Read to a child or group of children
• Help a child learn new words
• Help children understand what they have just read
• Read stories to a classroom as an occasional guest reader
• Help in a school library
• Act out a story from a children's book to a group of students as a performer in our Readers Theater
• Tutor students in math skills
The time commitment is 1 or 2 hours per week during the school year. Volunteer opportunities are also available for summer reading programs.
Training/Experience: Training and orientation provided by RSVP/America Reads Coordinator.

Position Responsibilities:
HSC is home to a wide variety of small animals, including freshwater and saltwater fish, invertebrates, amphibians, reptiles, turtles, tortoises, spiders, and small mammals.
Animal Care Volunteers assist HSC staff with feeding, cleaning, handling, and general care of some or all of the HSC animals and their habitats. HSC takes the care and well-being of the animals very seriously, therefore, all tasks are to be performed carefully and with constant consideration of the well-being of the animals. Animal care volunteers are also responsible for relaying any animal-related concerns to a HSC staff member in a prompt manner.

The Child Abuse Prevention Council meets once a month and attends a number of local health fairs and events such as the Water Carnival Parade and K-mmunity Kid's Day throughout the year. We participate in Paul Bunyan Broadcasting's Radiothon to End Child Abuse, a 24 hour radio-broadcast fundraiser, every December to raise funds for local programs that support healthy families.

Female age 18 or older needed to spend time with a middle school age girl. This girl is particularly interested in shopping, hair, and wants to go into law enforcement. Time commitment is an hour a week for a year. Mentoring includes spending time with the child and doing average and not so average activities such as going on walks, going to concerts, watching a movie, attending sporting events, etc. Mentoring not only benefits the child, it can be a lot of fun for you too! You can mentor one-to-one, be a mentor couple or a mentor family!
Training/Experience: Interview and one-on-one or group training with the Kinship North Coordinator. Kinship North manual and other helpful materials will be supplied.

Male age 18 or older to spend time with a boy in the Bemidji or Cass Lake area as a mentor and friend. We have 12 boys currently waiting for mentors, some have been on the waiting list for 3 years. Mentors are asked to spend an hour a week for a year with the child they mentor. Activities vary, based on mutual interests and can include anything from bike riding to going to events or even just hanging out together.
